To quote a British officer at the time, writing to his mother: “I know this sounds like a fairy tale… But it actually happened.” With the horror of death on a massive scale, people took a break. Widely reported in the press in 1914, it would not be mentioned in a single history of the war until 1984. It has never been repeated on such a large scale.
