The End of the Middle Ages. The Roman Empire lasted for 1,480 years. They lasted the longest in the east. 1,123 Years and 18 Days. But that all came to an end on May 29, 1453. Warfare would never be the same again. The city that couldn’t possibly fall—fell. The Turks change the name to Istanbul, meaning “The City.” But it would both unleash the Ottomans on Europe and start the age of discovery that would end up locating the new world.
