Description
As we head into the Bicentennial, this class will look at how and when American artists dealt with their past. The discovery of America, the Pilgrims and the Colonial period, the Revolution and Founding Fathers, the settling of the West, as well as American heroes, such as George Washington, Abraham Lincoln and Confederate generals, appear in familiar images. But these depictions often emerge at particular moments, such as the Centennial, and participate in the interpretation and re-interpretation of history. The focus will be on the nineteenth century, but we will discuss ways in which these issues relate to current debates about history. Please register for this class if you plan to join the class in person.
