Until the conflicts of recent times in the middle east, it doesn’t seem likely that an argument over who gets a set of keys ends in all the major powers of Europe going to war… but that’s exactly what happened. In the US, we think of the Civil War as the place where mines, nursing, traveling war tourists, ironclads, and photographs first made an appearance, but the truth is they all started half a world away in a conflict that stretched from Turkey to the Pacific Ocean.
