This film has it all – laughs, larceny, drama and suspense. Director Billy Wilder’s use of humor in a picture about a prisoner of war camp in WW II Germany may have initially been shocking to 1953 audiences but it proved to be a big hit at the box office and with the critics. The film garnered three Academy Award nominations and brought home the Oscar for actor William Holden. The story also spawned a controversial 1960s sitcom but the brilliance and appreciation of this film endures 70 years after its’ premiere.
