His popular appearances with Ed Sullivan, Johnny Carson, and Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In earned him a chance at his own variety series in the fall of 1970. By the end of the first season it was the #2 show on television. Wilson was a charismatic comedian and performer who welcomed all the greats of show biz to share the stage with himself and characters like Reverend Leroy, Herbie the Ice Cream Man, and the incomparable Geraldine Jones.
