Within four months of the British retreat from Boston, the new American nation was born. Everyone knew that its first test would be if American forces could hold New York against the greatest military and naval power on Earth. But despite the overall failure, American arms performed much better than both myth and history tells us. New York, an important series of battles are frequently brushed aside by historians—despite the fact it could have been much worse.
