Description
In the 1930’s, author Sinclair Lewis wrote a dystopian novel, “It Can’t Happen Here,” about fascism coming to America. This course will explore that subject given the current state of the political environment in America. The rise of fascism has been one of the most destructive movements of the past hundred years, bringing, oppression, war and devastation in its path. This course will be in three segments. The first will seek to define what fascism is based on its characteristics. Session two will review the historical experience of fascism and why it has appealed to many despite its historical failures. The third session will compare the political events and issues in contemporary America with historical fascism. Are there similarities pointing to the emergence of American fascism and, if so, what remedies are required and feasible? Extensive open discussion will be encouraged. This is an update of Larry’s previous offerings. Presented via Zoom. You will need a computer/phone/tablet with audio capabilities.
