Description
Afghanistan, America’s longest war. That’s not a badge of honor. In 2001, after the tragedy of 9/11, we went into Afghanistan to crush the Taliban who were suspected of hiding Osama Bin Laden. In 2021 – after 20 years, 2.3 trillion dollars, 6170 American military/contractor deaths, countless Afghan/Pakistan deaths – we left Afghanistan in an embarrassing retreat with the Taliban firmly in charge. did it happen? In previous classes we’ve taken a look at some of our foreign policy mistakes (Bay of Pigs, Vietnam, Iraq). Is there a common thread? In this class we’ll take a look at our 20 years in Afghanistan. We’ll take a look at the decision makers (and there were plenty – presidents, generals, advisors) and the decisions they made. What was the thought process? Did we get any value for our investment? Let’s take a look.
