    This film has it all - laughs, larceny, drama and suspense. Director Billy Wilder's use of humor in a picture about a prisoner of war camp in WW II Germany may have initially been shocking to 1953 audiences but it proved to be a big hit at the box office and with the critics. The film garnered three Academy Award nominations and brought home the Oscar for actor William Holden. The story also spawned a controversial 1960s sitcom but the brilliance and appreciation of this film endures 70 years after its' premiere.

    Political cartoonists are a gift to society. They are among our most compelling social critics. Using artistry, humor, and in-depth knowledge of current events, cartoonists craft commentary that captures the essence of controversial issues and encourages us to think further. Let’s look at how cartoonists carry out their passion for creating change, as they take on issues of current social and political concern, both nationally and internationally – the Covid pandemic, the war in Ukraine, gun violence, Roe v. Wade, etc. We’ll talk about recent developments in the cartooning profession and the challenges cartoonists are now facing.

Materials needed: colored pencils, drawing paper, scrap paper, reference photos, pencil sharpener - Instructors favorite is Derwent Studio or Prismacolor pencils- Papers - Strathmore artagain, or mixed media paper is recommended. Q-tips or a blending stump are also recommended.
