The photographer Steven Halpern wrote, “The family albums of my great-grandparents are filled with serious and severe people looking as if they were bringing their souls to judgement. The snapshots in the albums of my parents show Mom and Dad throwing snowballs at each other in the storm of 1947.” This serves as evidence that after 1880, a series of photographic innovations – hand-held and folding cameras, roll film, the astigmatic lens and finally, the cheap Brownie camera – made photography simple and available to nearly everyone.
