In the late 19^th century photographers interested in claiming photography as an art sought to distinguish themselves from the growing number of amateurs by producing distinctive works. At the same time Jacob Riis and Lewis Hine were documenting the slums of New York and child labor, using photography as a catalyst for social reform.
