Third Republic vs. Third Reich. Ever since the age of Napoleon, the French military had been one of the best in all of Europe. That is, until 1940, when it joined with countries like Italy in the league of military jokes. France’s defeat was so rapid that the entire campaign was over in six weeks. And the leader of the French Republic even telephoned Churchill to tell him they had lost after only six days. The German victory was so sudden, even the German generals were shocked. So, how did it all end up on a beach in Dunkirk? What went wrong? Nine Days Queen. In the history of England, every text will tell you about Henry VIII’s son Edward VI, who was followed up by Queen Mary. Who gave her throne to Elizabeth I. But England had another queen, their first. A woman the English tried to sweep under the rug. She signed her name: Jane the Queen. But she only lasted nine days. Her story may be the ultimate tale of palace intrigue. Pitting noble house against noble house in a tale that features greed and religious struggles that would rival any party politics going on today. In this class we'll use brainstorming techniques, writing prompts, and discussions of literature to help you get your own story on the page. The focus will be on generating short pieces of writing that you can share with other participants in a supportive workshop environment. The activities are generally applicable to both fiction and nonfiction writing, and all levels of experience are welcome. All levels of writing experience are welcome. Weaving, embroidery, quiltmaking and other forms of textile production have often been considered as utilitarian or domestic and, in their association with women, less prestigious than painting and other art forms. This four-session class will look at the history of textile production by women and ways in which feminist art history, (such as Rozika Parker's The Subversive Stitch), and contemporary artists have revisited this history and incorporated textiles into mainstream art. In the late 19^th century photographers interested in claiming photography as an art sought to distinguish themselves from the growing number of amateurs by producing distinctive works. At the same time Jacob Riis and Lewis Hine were documenting the slums of New York and child labor, using photography as a catalyst for social reform.  Please register for this class if you plan to access it via Zoom.
