We will create in the wonderful world of collage.  Collage derives its name from the French verb coller, to glue. The work of art is made by gluing things to the surface. Pasting, ripping, and cutting fragments of paper or any other materials of choice can be quite intoxicating for the artist.  We will discuss materials, how to best utilize them, composition, and design. We will alter papers, and search for “found paper” in magazines, books, and other opportunities. Learn your options in composition and design, excite your sense of creativity, and explore the wonder of collage. All materials are included.

The snapshots in the albums of my parents show Mom and Dad throwing snowballs at each other in the storm of 1947.” This serves as evidence that after 1880, a series of photographic innovations – hand-held and folding cameras, roll film, the astigmatic lens and finally, the cheap Brownie camera – made photography simple and available to nearly everyone. Joe loves both the standard posing conventions and the unintended – and sometimes intentional performing – that can be noticed and enjoyed in family snapshots and will show many examples from his flea-market and downloaded collections for us to consider.

Join Ann Cunningham as we discuss "Their Eyes Were Watching God" by Zora Neale Hurston.  'Their Eyes Were Watching God," an American classic, is the luminous and haunting novel about Janie Crawford, a Southern Black woman in the 1930s, whose journey from a free-spirited girl to a woman of independence and substance has inspired writers and readers for close to 70 years. This poetic, graceful love story, rooted in Black folk traditions and steeped in mythic realism, celebrates boldly and brilliantly African-American culture and heritage. And in a powerful, mesmerizing narrative, it pays quiet tribute to a Black woman who, though constricted by the times, still demanded to be heard. Originally published in 1937 and long out of print, the book was reissued in 1975 and nearly three decades later Their Eyes Were Watching God is considered a seminal novel in American fiction.'  Come having read the book and ready for a lively and respectful discussion.
